Detection of Antineutrinos for Non-Proliferation
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss the feasibility of using the detection of electron antineutrinos produced in fission to monitor the time dependence of the Plutonium content of nuclear power reactors and large (> 1 MWatt) research reactors. If practical such a scheme would allow worldwide, automated monitoring of reactors and, thereby, the detection of proliferation attempts. Although this idea shows some promise, we find that a practical scheme is difficult to envision. We also consider using fission antineutrino spectra to determine and attribute the fuel in an unexploded nuclear device. We find it would not be possible to determine the isotopic content of such a device in this manner. Finally, we examine the possibility of antineutrino detection of an unannounced low-yield (∼ 1kton) nuclear explosion. We argue this can be ruled out completely. Recoilless Resonant Emission and Detection of Electron Antineutrinos
Recoilless resonant capture of monoenergetic electron antineutrinos (Mössbauer antineutrinos) emitted in bound-state β -decay in the system 3H 3He is discussed. The recoilfree fraction including a possible phonon excitation due to local lattice expansion and contraction at the time of the nuclear transition, homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening, and the relativistic second-order Dopple...
متن کاملRemote detection of undeclared nuclear reactors using the WATCHMAN detector
Remote detection of undeclared nuclear reactors remains one of the key goals concerning global nuclear security. To meet this goal the WATCHMAN collaboration has proposed the construction of a water based antineutrino detector, sited 13 to 25 kilometres from a nuclear reactor complex. Antineutrinos from the reactor interact in the water of the detector via an inverse beta decay interaction resu...
متن کاملKamLAND, solar antineutrinos and their magnetic moment
We investigate the possibility of detecting solar antineutrinos with the KamLAND experiment. These antineutrinos are predicted by spin-flavor oscillations at a significant rate even if this mechanism is not the leading solution to the SNP. The recent evidence from SNO shows that a) the neutrino oscillates, only around 34% of the initial solar neutrinos arrive at the Earth as electron neutrinos ...
متن کاملNeutrinos from Stellar Collapse: Effects of flavour mixing
We study the effect of non-vanishing masses and mixings among neutrino flavours on the detection of neutrinos from stellar collapse by a water Cerenkov detector. We consider a realistic frame-work in which there are three neutrino flavours whose mass squared differences and mixings are constrained by the present understanding of solar and atmospheric neutrinos. We also include the effects of hi...
متن کاملThe Non-Aligned Movement and Nuclear Disarmament: Stance and Actions
The emergence of nuclear weapons as a new actor in international relations has introduced a new area in the international security arena. Since the appearance of these weapons, there have been increasing efforts to limit and destroy them in order to achieve global peace in the framework of disarmament and centered around the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Along with the eme...
